Working around power lines

How to apply to transport a tall load

Travelling with an unusually tall load on your vehicle can be dangerous, if there is the potential to hit any overhead lines.

You must apply for a Close Approach Consent - For High Loads if you plan to move any tall structure that is higher than 4.75m, such as a house or a boat, near our overhead networks.

To apply for a Close Approach Consent - For High Loads, download and complete the formbelow and send it to:

176 Gracefield Street,
Seaview
PO Box 31906,
Lower Hutt 5010

Phone:  04 912 2191
Fax:  04 912 2212

For loads between 4.75 and 5.4 metres high:

  • We will check the proposed route for you
  • If the route is clear to the height required, a permit will be issued
  • If there are low lines we will arrange to escort the load at no cost

For loads 5.4 metres high and over:

  • We will check the proposed route for you
  • If the route is clear to the height required, a permit will be issued
  • If the route is not clear we will arrange an escort. A charge will apply

If we need to disconnect power anywhere along the route, a notice period of up to 20 days is required so we can inform customers who will be affected.
