Reporting outages
Power out? Work through these three steps to find out what's happening and get it reported.
Check whether it's just your property
Look at your switchboard. Is the main switch on, and have any fuses or circuit breakers tripped? Then check whether your neighbours' lights are on.
If it's only your property, the problem may be with the wiring on your side of the connection, and an electrician may need to check it.
Check our outage map
If your area is shown, we already know about it and you don't need to report it. The map shows an estimated restoration time where we have one, and we update it as our crews work.
Not on the map? Tell your power company
Your power company (electricity retailer) is the company you pay your power bill to. They'll check your account and pass the fault to us so we can send a crew as quickly as we can.
Always treat lines and cables as live. Stay well clear of anything fallen or damaged, keep others away, and call 0800 248 148.
While you wait
Stay safe
-
- Use torches, not candles, because of the risk of fire.
- Never use a generator, barbecue, portable cooker, or camping stove indoors. They can cause carbon monoxide poisoning and fire.
- If you're out, traffic signals might not be working.
Be prepared for the power coming back
-
- Unplug appliances. Some could be hazardous if they turn on unexpectedly, and others could be damaged by a power surge.
- Leave on light switched on so you know when the power's back.
- Check on your neighbours if you can, especially elderly or vulnerable.
Your power company is your first point of contact because they can check your account and confirm whether your property is affected by a known outage. If it isn't they'll report the fault to us so we can investigate.
Restoration times depend on the cause and extent of the outage. If we have an estimated restoration time, it will be shown on our outage map and updated as our crews assess and repair the network.
If you see the power back on across the street or nearby and you're still without power, remember that not all circuits are restored at once. However, if you're still without power after your neighbours are back on, please let your electricity retailer know.
Your company is the name on your power bill. You can view the contact details for all power companies that operate in Wellington here: Power company contact details
Medically dependent?
If you rely on equipment that needs power:
- Follow your emergency response plan.
- Contact your healthcare provider if the outage puts you at risk.
- In a medical emergency, call 111.
Make sure your power company knows your medically dependent before an outage happens.
