Kenepuru–Whittakers New Feeder Installation Project
About the project
Wellington Electricity (we*) is your local lines company responsible for managing the poles, wires and equipment that safely delivers electricity to Porirua, the Hutt Valley and Wellington.
The Kenepuru–Whittakers New Feeder Installation Project is a network improvement project designed to increase the reliability and resilience of electricity supply in the Porirua area. The project involves construction of underground ducts and installation of new electricity cables, installation of new switchgear and transformer equipment and connecting the new cables into the existing electricity network.
How will this help with your power?
The project will:
- Improve the reliability of electricity supply to customers in the Porirua area.
- Better balance electrical load across the network in the area
- Help minimise the risk and impact of power supply interruptions.
Where’s affected?
The work is being carried out in the Kenepuru area (Kenepuru Drive, Rahia St, Mohuia Cres). See map below
How will the work impact me?
The project target completion is November 2026.
Roadworks and traffic management are required to safely install underground cables and associated infrastructure. Our contractor crews have carefully scoped the work to minimise inconvenience.
Residents, businesses and travellers in the area can expect:
- Traffic management, including stop/go when required
· If electricity assets are located on private land, contractors may contact property owners to arrange access. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and restore affected areas once work is complete.
- Tree trimming or vegetation management where trees are too close to power lines
Power outages are not planned or expected during this project. If you do however experience an outage for whatever reason, please contact your electricity retailer in the first instance.
Who’s involved?
The project is managed by Wellington Electricity and delivered with support from two contractors:
- Omexom
- PCL Contracting
The contractors may contact affected residents and businesses directly regarding specific works or access requirements.
What we’ve done to date
- PCL is preparing for installation of civil ducts.
- Omexom is preparing to undertake cable installation and electrical asset installations.
- A detailed construction programme and timeline will be communicated to the community once finalised.
