The Kenepuru–Whittakers New Feeder Installation Project
Project Overview
The Kenepuru–Whittakers New Feeder Installation Project is a Wellington Electricity network improvement project designed to increase the reliability and resilience of electricity supply in the Porirua area. The project involves building underground ducts, installing new electricity cables, installing new switchgear and transformer equipment, and connecting the new cables to the existing electricity network. Work is taking place in Kenepuru, along Kenepuru Drive, Raiha Street and Mohuia Crescent.
Works started in Mid July. Target completion is November 2026.
Current Status
Updated: 5 October 2026
Stage 1 – Kenepuru Drive end (in progress)
Trenching along Kenepuru Drive is complete, and the road has been reinstated. PCL has moved on to Raiha Street, where duct installation is progressing well.
Stage 2 – Mohuia Crescent end (awaiting approval)
We've submitted our application to work in the road (Corridor Access Request) and our Traffic Management Plan. Work at this end will start once the Traffic Management Plan is approved.
Overall progress: Civil works are under way and moving along Raiha Street. Planning for the electrical works is in progress. No power outages are expected.
What's next: PCL will continue installing ducts along Raiha Street. Stage 2 work at the Mohuia Crescent end will begin once traffic management approval is received.
Location Overview
The project will:
- Improve the reliability of electricity supply to customers in the Porirua area.
- Better balance electrical load across the network in the area.
- Help minimise the risk and impact of power supply interruptions.
The project includes:
- Construction of underground civil ducts. Installation of new electricity cables.
- Installation of new switchgear and transformer equipment.
- Connecting the new cables to the existing electricity network.
Residents, businesses and travellers in the area may experience: Traffic management, including stop/go when required. Requests for site access where electricity assets are located on private property. Tree trimming or vegetation management where trees are too close to power lines.
The project is managed by Wellington Electricity and delivered with support from:
- PCL Contracting
- Omexom
These contractors may contact affected residents and businesses directly regarding specific works or access requirements.
- PCL is carrying out the civil works, including duct installation.
- Omexom will carry out cable installation and electrical asset installations.
No power outages are planned or expected during this project. If you do experience an outage for any reason, please contact your electricity retailer in the first instance.
Roadworks and traffic management are required to safely install underground cables and associated infrastructure. Our contractor crews have carefully scoped the work to minimise inconvenience.
If electricity assets are located on private land, contractors may contact property owners to arrange access. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption and restore affected areas once work is complete.
The project target completion is November 2026.
