A 3 year programme aimed to reduce outage times after a large earthquake

If a 7.5 magnitude earthquake occurred on the Wellington fault line, many roads could be blocked by slips isolating parts of the regions from each other. This has the potential to slow down repairs to our network, which could suffer significant damage in such an event. Such delays could result in an extended loss of electricity supply for many of our customers.

In March 2018, the Commerce Commission approved Wellington Electricity's proposal to invest $31m in earthquake readiness activities. Our 3 year delivery programme aims to reduce outage times after a large earthquake and is further split into 5 core workstreams. Click on a workstream name to find out more about each stream's goals:

  1. Seismically strengthen 91 buildings

  2. Construct two portable substations

  3. Construct 3 data centres

  4. Upgrade radio and phone system

  5. Increase spares stock
