From September 2019 through to September 2020, we're going to be working in Wellington City Council's Caribbean Reserve to underground and realign some of our High Voltage cables.
What's Happening? Caribbean Reserve, in Grenada North, is an area which contains a number of both Transpower and Wellington Electricity High Voltage overhead cables, some of which cross close to each other. The purpose of this project is to change the alignment of and underground some of our cables to remove those crossings as a safety precaution for ongoing maintenance of the cables.
When? The first part of our project will start in September 2019 and finish in December 2019 top allow Transpower's part of the project to be completed. We will then start up again in January 2020 to remove any of our network assets and equipment which no longer needed in that area and to restore the work site to a same or better condition than when we started the work. The project is planned to finish in September 2020.
Work will typically take place between the hours of 7.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Saturday unless otherwise advised via the project's Site Hazard Notice Board.
What Can I Expect To See? A cable trench will be dug along the existing access tracks for Caribbean Reserve and poles will be installed close to those access tracks. When the High Voltage cables are realigned, maintenance access tracks will be created for the new poles and overhead cables will be installed soon after. Helicopters will be used at times to assist the construction crews in this work.
Traffic and pedestrian management will be in place over this period to ensure vehicles and pedestrians are guided safely along the Reserve and around the work sites.
Will I Lose Electricity Supply? Only briefly. Some local customers may experience a short power outage while our contractor connects a generator. This will be closer towards the end of the project and those customers will be notified either directly by the contractors performing the work or by their retailers
How Else Might I Be Affected? Access to the reserve by narrow sealed road will be restricted at times when heavy equipment and materials are delivered. Stop/go Traffic Management will be in place.
While some of the cables are undergrounded, sections of the access tracks will be closed to the public and when other cables are realigned, the whole of Caribbean Reserve will be closed. We take these actions to ensure that the public and our field crews are kept safe.
The project's Site Hazard Notice Board will tell the public what activity is planned for each day.
